Break

I'm taking an official break from lace and from feeling guilty about not making a doll yet. The lace is harder, as it should be in a progressive book, but I'm not quite feeling the inspiration right now. This has happened once already, and the good feelings did come back, so I'm not worried. This is really a very pretty pattern, just a little complicated. I think I'm about half-way through the book now, but it will take longer on the remaining patterns. I went to the local lace guild meeting on Tuesday night! The meeting place isn't exactly conducive to bobbin lace making, but it is great for a social gathering. I got high praise from someone whose opinion matters to me, and that felt really good, especially when others joined in. Then later I started to suspect that I was having my ego stroked. I'm always worried that my lace isn't good enough, and certain people know that about me. At the time, though, it felt good, and I'll try to just accept that. I was planning to do a lot of cooking today, but I'm having a glass of wine and rethinking those plans. I may just read some lace books.

  1. Sorry that all ran together. iPad hates blogger and wouldn't let me make separate paragraphs.

  2. the only person that has to like it is you. it's nice when other people like what you're doing but that doesn't always happen.

    1. This is good advice, but I still worry that my lace will not be considered high quality. I plan to (hopefully) sell dolls that have my lace incorporated in their costumes, and I want to make sure I'm sending out good lace. The dolls are the only reason I can justify spending so much time on lace. I am obsessed with the idea of dolls wearing my lace. If my own dolls don't work out, I will make clothes for other dolls. Either way, I plan to sell my lace in one form or another.

  3. Don't think of it as ego-stroking. Think of it as support. We all need it. I think the fact your lace is handmade is enough to make your doll's clothes outstanding. Do you know of any other dollmaker who has that kind of dedication? I'm really amazed at your dedication and patience. I suppose the patterns in the lace book will get more and more complicated as you progress, otherwise you wouldn't be learning anything new each time. The lace meeting sound like fun, and yes, I'd assume there'd be more chatting and socialising than actual lace making.
